ARTIST SELECTION POLICY
By policy, Hermitage Artists are selected by nomination only. We have no application process by which artists may apply. Our National Curatorial Council nominates accomplished mid-career artists for our Core Residency Program and our fellows are selected from the pool of nominees.
There are two exceptions to the above policy:
• The Sarasota County Fellows Program detailed below.
• The State Teacher/Artist Residencies (STAR) Program detailed below.
While we understand that this selection policy may leave many artists who wish to work at the Hermitage somewhat frustrated, we recommend contacting the Alliance of Artist Communities to identify a community that will be more appropriate.
SARASOTA COUNTY FELLOWS
Each summer, the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County sponsors the John Ringling Towers Individual Artist Awards, competitive grants to visual artists, writers and composers currently residing in Sarasota County, Florida. These adjudicated grants consist of a cash award between $3,000 and $5,000. In addition to the cash prize, the panel will also award three-week Hermitage residencies to the winners in each category.
For application information, visit the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County.
STATE TEACHER/ARTIST RESIDENCIES (STAR)
Each spring, the Hermitage, in partnership with the Florida Alliance for Arts Education (FAAE) invites full time Florida public school arts teachers in visual art, music, drama, dance, and creative writing to apply for a three-week mid-summer residency. Teachers selected for the program are offered living space and studio space to accomplish artistic work and admission is solely based on artistic quality.
Guidelines and applications can be found here.
