The Hermitage campus includes a pre-historic Calusa midden, the 1907 Hermitage House, and the 1940s Whitney complex. Through preservation and adaptive reuse, we have a unique “Old Florida” beach-front refuge registered in the National Register of Historic Places.
ECOLOGICAL RESTORATION
The Hermitage encompasses some of Florida’s purest environmental treasures, including a beach stretching for miles in both directions, one of the finest examples of sea turtle nesting habitat, and three distinct ecosystems: coastal hammock, coastal wetland, and black mangrove. We make every effort to eradicate invasive species and restore the landscape to a native Florida preserve that will inspire our resident artists and visitors alike.
