ARTIST SELECTION POLICY By policy, Hermitage Artists are selected by nomination only. We have no application process by which artists may apply. Our National Artist Advisory Committee nominates accomplished mid-career artists and our fellows are selected from the pool of nominees.

There are two exceptions to the above policy:

  • The Sarasota County Fellows Program detailed below.
  • Collaborations with other arts organizations which may place artists in our facility.
While we understand that this selection policy may leave many artists who wish to work at the Hermitage somewhat frustrated, we recommend contacting the Alliance of Artist Communities to identify a community that will be more appropriate.

SARASOTA COUNTY FELLOWS Each summer, the Sarasota County Arts Council sponsors competitive grants to visual artists, writers and composers currently residing in Sarasota County only. These adjudicated grants consist of a cash award between $3,000 and $5,000. In addition to the cash prize, the adjudicating panel will also award 3-week Hermitage residencies to the winners in each category. The best time to contact the Sarasota County Arts Council about these grants is in the late spring / early summer.

The application deadline for 2010 has passed. Contact the Sarasota County Arts Council for further information.

For application information, visit the Sarasota County Arts Council.
